Hi, I'm Barbara Beam. It's great to see you!

Barbara Beam has been a high school English teacher for what seems like hundreds of years. She has taught World Lit., Introduction to Lit., and British Lit., but her favorite is American Lit. because she likes the Puritan witch hunts, the Emerson hippies, and Jay Gatsby's parties. She has taught over 3000 students and has only been threatened twice. Beam helps us all realize that we must learn to laugh at ourselves and our circumstances to survive the obstacles we each must face.  She has written thousands of songs, several screenplays and theater scripts, and a few novels.

It was so nice to read a novel where the heroine is a strong, independent, black female who is not a victim, but a victor over every challenge she faces, and who does not attempt to live under the expectations of her gender, her race, her religion, her family, or her peers. Maya lives her own life doing what she feels is right based on the lessons of her youth and her God. She doesn't run from who she is, but instead, embraces it with the gusto she embraces everything in her life.

Maya is a strong peaceful presence in a world full of speed and chaos. Fishing demands we sit and wait. The world could use more of thant, and here's a book to illustrate why. Maya and her father feel as real as if they lived next door. On the surface, this is a beautiful book about a fisherman and the art of her craft. Underneath, it's a study in family, legacy and testing unbreakable bonds.
